10th Lagos Motor Fair - Are We There Yet?

The Lagos Motor Fair and Autoparts Expo ended on Wednesday 6th May. Your blog was there in attendance to check out some of the automobiles on display and took snapshots of what looked like a poorly attended show as established brands such as Mercedes, Honda, BMW, Landrover, Hyundai, Volvo, Renault, etc were nowhere to be found. To save the day were Toyota and Kia.

A new entrant in the Nigerian automobile space was on hand at the fair…GAC Motor. One of the products on display, the GS5 Trumpchi comes with quite an exquisite look and in its class of crossover SUVs seems to rival the likes of the Hyundai ix35 and the Toyota RAV4. From the exterior to the engine, the trunk and the interior, GAC seems to be here to prove a point…take the market by storm and give other brands a reason to fasten their seatbelts.

The Auto parts section was not left out of the action. From batteries to lighting, from servicing parts to heavy parts, the auto parts guys gave people a reason to walk around in the cool but small tent where they had their various stands. Here too, attendance was poor.

Overall, it felt like the show lacked adequate attendance from established brands. Reasons for their absence, I cannot tell but I believe it is high time Nigeria has a befitting auto show that will attract tourists from all over the world to witness what new automobiles will be serving the African continent in years to come.

To the organizers, I say kudos because it’s not an easy task to organize such an event but more needs to be done to sensitize the public about the show. More interesting features should be introduced that will attract kids and their parents to the show. The easiest way to a parent’s pocket is through their children. Established brands need to be part of the event to showcase state of the art automobiles, just like it is done in Chicago, Geneva, Shanghai, Dubai, Paris, etc. Nigerians drive some of the most expensive automobiles in the world, so why shouldn’t we have a befitting display from automakers’ brands here in Nigeria if we spend that much on exotic automobiles?
