Since its beginnings back
in 1991, all the way to 2010, Ford Explorer belonged to the class of mid-size
SUVs but, in 2011 it went through serious changes and from mid-size SUV class
moved to full-size crossover SUV. The 2016 Ford Explorer belongs to fifth
generation, it debuted at 2015 LA Auto Show and it should be available in
dealerships on summer 2015.
Engine
The 2016 Ford Explorer is
offered in three models. The first one is powered by 2.3 liter EcoBoost
four-cylinder engine which delivers 270 horsepower and 400 lb-ft of torque.
Under the hood of the second model is 3.5-liter Ti-VCT V-6 engine which
delivers 290 horse power and 255 lb-ft of torque and it’s paired with six-speed
SelectShift Automatic transmission, while third model offers 3.5-liter EcoBoost
V-6 with 365 hp, 350 lb-ft torque and also six-speed SelectShift Automatic
transmission.
The power distributed to
the front and rear wheels will be shown on revised four-wheel-drive gauge
display, while the Terrain Management System offers four different terrain
driving modes, depending on driving conditions/road – normal, snow, mud and
sand. When the car is started it is automatically switched to Normal mode.
The 2016 Explorer went
through some serious changes. It features completely new front and rear fascia
and on the front is more conventional honeycomb-styled grille.
New pentangular headlights
are placed higher and there are also new fog lamps which are also placed a bit
higher compared to previous model. All the changes on front made it look a bit
robust.
Fewer changes are notable
around back where Explorer mostly kept its standard looks with slightly smaller
taillights. The car will roll on standard 18 inch wheels while 20 inch is
optional.
Some very interesting and
exclusive features are part of the new Platinum trim which includes dual panel
moonroof, lighting surrounds for headlamps, bespoke 20 inch wheels with dark
pockets and more.
Interior
The interior of the 2016
Ford Explorer is not significantly changed but it looks much more practical and
comfortable for driver himself. Instrument cluster looks more sophisticated
than on last year’s model, while its infotainment system now features regular
buttons instead of touch sensitive ones.
In order to improve
comfort, the door armrests are higher while its new door seals improve
quietness during driving. Mentioned Platinum trim provides wood accents, while
whole interior is covered in premium leather including dashboard and steering
wheel, giving overall very luxurious and high-style appearance. Images: autos.jdpower.com
